Vicki Carol (Justice) Chalker

Vicki Carol Chalker, a resident of Dothan, AL, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 3rd. She was 66 years old.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 8th at 11:00 a.m. at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Brother Jimmy Skipper and Pastor Ralph Sigler officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made in her honor to the Wiregrass Humane Society.

Vicki was born in Hartford, AL and graduated from Geneva County High School. She received her degree in Nursing from Wallace College. She loved on many babies as a Neonatal nurse, and cared for sick newborns in the Intensive Care nursery at Southeast Alabama Medical Center, including assisting with emergency helicopter transports to Birmingham. She also served as a public health nurse in Dale County for several years, giving out countless immunizations to protect the children in the area.

In the early 1980's, Vicki was forced to give up her beloved nursing career when she was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus at Emory University in Atlanta. Although she was battling the illness herself, on her good days, she served others by volunteering to drive Lupus patients to their appointments in Montgomery before there were Rheumatologists practicing in Dothan.

Vicki married Mike Chalker in 1979. For almost 43 years, their love gave true meaning to the phrase "in sickness and in health." Together, they loved to cheer on the Alabama Crimson Tide and the Atlanta Braves, to work on their beautifully manicured yard, and to fill their grandchildren with sweets before sending them home.

Vicki was the ultimate shopping buddy. Throughout her life, she mastered the art of hunting for a good bargain. She loved garage sales, thrift shops, and antique stores, and for a while, she enjoyed having her own booth at local antique malls. Vicki also had a heart for children, animals, and flowers. She adopted and cared for many animals in her lifetime. She earned a Master Gardener certificate and whenever her health allowed, she had her hands in the soil.

If you ever met Vicki, you liked her immediately, and you very soon loved her. She radiated gentleness, with a sweet smile and loving demeanor that would charm anyone she met. She battled multiple health challenges in her life; however, she never let her health issues define her, and always maintained a loving, caring spirit. She continued to put others' needs above her own and was a source of encouragement and positivity for anyone she encountered. Even in the last days of her life, as she struggled with severe illness, her loving spirit was evident as she would compliment hospital staff and ensure everyone in the room was comfortable.

Vicki was love personified, and a true testament to the strength of the human spirit. From decorating with her antique finds, to growing gorgeous flower gardens, to spreading kindness to everyone she met, Vicki made the world a much more beautiful place.

She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Justice; and a brother, Terry Justice.

Survivors include her husband, William Michael Chalker; her daughters, Brandee Brunson and Blair (David) Brown; her grandchildren, Miles Brown and Isaac Brown; her parents, Betty and Junior Ready; her brothers, Rickey (Gail) Justice and Phillip (Debra) Justice; her special friends, Carol and Jimmy Skipper and Fred and Kathy Johnson, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
