Edwin (Ed) Givens Obituary

Senior Chief Petty Officer Edwin (Ed) L. Givens, USN, Ret., a resident of Dothan, passed away on Saturday, March 18, 2023 lovingly surrounded by his family. He was 92 years old.

A celebration of Edwin's life will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at Highland Park United Methodist Church with Pastor Stephanie Cox officiating. Edwin will be laid to rest with full military honors next to his wife in Memory Hill Cemetery in Dothan. The family will receive friends at the church on Wednesday from 10-11 am. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Highland Park United Methodist Church General Fund, 1619 S. Park Ave., Dothan, AL 36301.

Edwin was born on January 26, 1931 in the Union Community three miles north of Slocomb, Alabama. He served our country in the US Navy during the Korean and Vietnam conflicts, retiring in 1968 after serving for 20 years. He married Anna (Ann) M. Blevens of Crawford, Nebraska on September 28, 1952. Together they had four wonderful children, Chris Lee of San Diego, Kathy Ann (Charlie) Galea of San Diego, Gary Manuel (Peggy) Givens of Cottonwood, AL, and Carol Joan (Brian) Goguen, of Dothan, AL.

Edwin worked at Hedstrom Company for eight years before forming his own business and did various jobs to support his family. He was the eight of nine children born to H. M and Vera (Kirkland) Givens. Edwin was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church, the Masonic Order since 1969, and also a Life Member of the VFW and Fleet Reserve Association.

Edwin was preceded in death by the love of his life, Ann, his parents, his brothers, David, Buford, Herlon, Winfred, and Kenneth, his sisters, Bessie Riley, Hilda Enfinger, and Jewel Hughes.

Survivors include his children and their spouses; his grandson, Aldon Garrett (Rebecca) Givens of Columbia, SC and their children; his step-grandson, Jared (Jillian) Etress of Cottonwood, AL and their children; several nieces and nephews; and a very special Sunday School Teacher, Mary Zeron.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Dr. Walter Doty, III and Kaitlin Sketo of Kindred Hospice for their care and compassion during their time of need.
