Susan Carol Summers, a beacon of love and faith, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on July 20, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 77. Born in Montgomery, Alabama, on December 30, 1947, Susan's life was a testament to her unwavering spirit and the joy she found in her family and faith.
Susan's early years in Dothan laid the foundation for a life filled with love, laughter, and sports. She carried her passion for athletics throughout her life, often found umpiring or keeping score at various sporting events, her presence a constant encouragement to players and fans alike. Susan's spirited personality and generous heart made her the matriarch everyone turned to, earning her the affectionate nickname "Grandma Susan or Ms. Susan" among her loved ones.
After obtaining her Associates Degree, Susan's professional life was as dynamic as her personality. Her colleagues fondly remember her for always keeping everyone straight with her spunky attitude. But it was her role as a devoted mother and grandmother that truly defined her. Susan was the epitome of a loving, faith-filled, and generous soul, qualities that radiated in her every action.
Susan was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry David Summers. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength in her children, Brandi (Jeff) Grantham, Britt (Kelly) Speigner, stepdaughter Tina Summers, and her “adopted daughter”, Stephanie Bowman. Her grandchildren, Taylor (Josh) Fleming, Hannah Mock, Reagan Mock, Brandi (Jonathan) Givens, Ryan (Abigail) Grantham, Jacob (Devyn) Grantham, Jackson (Morgan) Grantham, Tyler (Julia) Grantham, and Morgan Sean Austin, will forever cherish the precious moments spent with their grandmother. Susan was also blessed with great-grandchildren, Emma Grantham, Jasper Grantham, Juniper Grantham, Landon Givens, Lucas Givens, Kaleigh Givens, Karleigh Givens, Kenzleigh Givens, Brooks Fleming, Ridge Fleming, and the soon-to-be-born Axel Grantham, all of whom brought immense joy to her later years.
Susan's sister, Cathy Hall Kirkland, along with her niece, Kacee (Jeremy) Sims, will hold dear the memories of her unwavering support and guidance. Her love for her family was matched only by her dedication to her faith. Susan was a faithful member of Cloverdale Baptist Church in Dothan, where she found strength and community.
A lifelong fan of Alabama football and Braves baseball, Susan's enthusiasm for her teams was infectious. She was known to light up a room with her spirit and cheer on game days, sharing those moments with anyone around her.
Susan's life was a living example of the Christian virtues she held dear. Her legacy of love, faith, and generosity will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her. As we say farewell to Susan Carol Summers, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a soul that will forever inspire us to embrace each day with the same love and grace she so effortlessly displayed.
