Scot Alan Downes, known to many simply as Scot, passed away on October 23, 2026, in Hartford, Alabama, at the age of 61.
Scot was born on January 2, 1965, in Jacksonville, Illinois, and later moved to Dothan in 1983, where he built a life marked by hard work, loyalty, and devotion to the people he loved. He carried himself with quiet strength and a steady presence that brought comfort to those around him. Those who knew him best will remember a man who was funny, courageous, and gentle, with a heart that was always bigger than he let on.
Scot worked in construction and later in retail, and in each line of work he was known for his reliability and strong work ethic. He took pride in doing a job well and in being someone others could depend on. His life of service extended beyond his work, as he proudly served in the National Guard and then spent five years in the United States Navy. During his military service, he served aboard the USS Nimitz and the USS Theodore Roosevelt, experiences that reflected his commitment to duty and his willingness to serve his country with honor.
Above all else, Scot was a family man. He was the love of Beverly Annette Hardy’s life, and together they shared a bond that was deeply cherished by all who knew them. He also embraced Beverly’s children, Andy Howell, Betsy Howell, and Ashley (Tim) Ward, as his own. He loved their children, Bethanie, Skylar, Carlton, also known as Tug, and Harper, and took great joy in being part of their lives. He was a protector of his family, a good son to his parents, and a steady source of love and strength for those closest to him.
He is survived by his brother, James Downes; his sisters, Joyce (Geoff) Goodwin-Albert, Rhonda Ward, and Debbie Downes-Parks; and his nieces and nephews, Jeremy Downes, Crystal Exum, Holly King, Christie Ellenburg, Brenton Ward, Amanda Stratton, Alex Anderson, Erika Hill, and Caitlin Parks. He also leaves behind several great-nieces and great-nephews, along with special aunts and cousins who held a meaningful place in his life.
Scot was a teddy bear with an odd sense of humor, and those who loved him will always smile at the memories he created with his wit and warmth. He loved Auburn football and was a devoted movie buff, especially when it came to science fiction. Whether he was sharing a laugh, watching a game, or enjoying a favorite film, he brought his own unique spirit to every moment.
His family and friends will remember him as a good guy in the truest sense, a man whose courage was matched by his kindness and whose gentle nature touched many lives. Though he has left this world, the love he gave, the service he rendered, and the memories he created will remain a lasting comfort to all who knew and loved him.
