Ronnie Preston Skinner, affectionately known as Preston by his loved ones, passed away peacefully on January 28, 2026, in his hometown of Dothan, Alabama. Born on November 4, 1950, in the same nurturing community, he spent his entire life dedicated to his family, work, and the simple pleasures that made his life whole.
Preston was a proud Dothan High School graduate who put his education to practical use by managing several retail stores throughout his life. His work ethic and dedication to his profession were matched only by his commitment to his family and the community he served. He was a well-known figure in local business circles and was respected for his managerial skills and the genuine care he showed to his employees and customers.
He is survived by his significant other and caretaker, Julia Shelton, who stood by him with unwavering love and support. Preston's legacy continues through his children: Jarrod Skinner and his wife Katie, Eric Skinner and his wife Lorraine, Brenna Odom and her husband Heath, Melissa Beaudoin and her husband Rod, and Jennifer Cannon and her husband Tryon. His life was further enriched by the joy of his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward his stories and values. Preston also leaves behind his brother, Kent Skinner and his wife Donna, and his sister, Vicki Harris, as well as several cherished nieces and nephews.
Preston's interests painted the picture of a man who loved life's simple joys. He was a gentle giant whose passion for Alabama football was only matched by the love he had for his Pomeranians. His artistic talent was evident to all who knew him, with his skill in drawing and his beautiful handwriting leaving a lasting impression. Preston was also known for his love of conversation, able to engage and captivate with his storytelling and genuine interest in others.
As we remember Preston, we celebrate a life well-lived, marked by kindness, perseverance, and a warmhearted spirit that drew people to him. He was a man whose presence could fill a room, not just with his stature but with the magnitude of his character. His memory will be cherished and kept alive in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to know him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to SouthernCare Hospice for their compassionate care and support.
A celebration of Preston’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, February 2, 2026 at Sunset Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time.
