Robert Herman Donaldson, Jr., passed away peacefully on November 2, 2023, at UAB, Birmingham, Alabama. Robert was born on September 1, 1951, in Phenix City, Alabama, to the late Robert and Lois Wiggins Donaldson, Sr.
Robert grew up in Phenix City, but was raised in Dothan where he attended Ashford High School. Later, he embarked on a varied career path that demonstrated his versatility and resilience. He was just as comfortable under the hood of a car as he was working on an oil rig. Later in his career, he found his calling as a Tugboat captain, a role that showcased his leadership and problem-solving skills. His colleagues admired his work ethic, and he made lifelong friends in every job he held.
Robert was a man of many interests and talents. He loved animals, and music was another passion for Robert. He had a natural ability to play the guitar and sing, and he often entertained family and friends with his musical talents.
In 1997, Robert married his beloved wife, Diane. Their marriage was a testament to their love and commitment to each other. Robert was a loving father to Cherish and stepfather to Diane's daughters, Kimberly, Amy, and Kelly. He cherished his role as a grandfather to nine grandchildren and a great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren. He was a devoted family man who took great pride in his family's accomplishments. Robert also leaves behind his sisters, Helen Daniels and Robyn Walding, and a host of nieces and nephews who will miss his presence in their lives.
A celebration of Robert's life will be held at 11 am on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Grimes Community Church (Lighthouse) with Brother Cecil Conery and Pastor Michael McGowan officiating. All who knew and loved Robert are welcome to attend and share their memories of a man who left an indelible mark on their lives.
