Phillip Edward Horne, a cherished husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on December 25, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on October 30, 1947 to the late Cloady and Mary Chellie Horne, Phillip led a life marked by devotion to his family, his work, and his community, leaving a legacy of love and service that will be remembered by all who knew him.
Phillip graduated from Headland High School in 1966, setting the stage for a fulfilling career. He dedicated 36 years to DMI Company, where he excelled as a Plant Manager and Industrial Engineer before retiring in 1996. His professional achievements were paralleled by his commitment to his family's business, Horne Farms. For over 50 years, he poured his heart into the farm, a testament to his love for agriculture and cattle operation. He also owned Grimes Preto Store.
A pillar of the Grimes community, Phillip was a lifelong resident who never knew a stranger. He was a faithful member of the Cornith Freewill Baptist Church for 52 years, where he served as a deacon for 51 years, as well as a church treasurer and Sunday school teacher. His dedication to his faith and community extended to his service as a clerk for the Town of Grimes for an impressive 55 years and as a board member of the Dale County Board of Education.
Phillip's interests reflected the richness of his character. Known as a good, Godly man, his reputation as a great example was evident in his daily life. He enjoyed the simple pleasure of riding around to check on his cows and engaging in conversations with friends and neighbors. A devoted sports fan, he never missed a ball game involving his children and grandchildren, taking great joy in watching them play and his sons and grandsons coach.
His family, the center of his world, included his wife, Linda Horne; his son, Scott Horne, and wife, Janice; his daughter-in-law, Alisa Horne; his stepson, Russell Adkins; and his stepdaughter, Amanda Adkins. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Sandra Horne, whose memory remained close to his heart. Though he grieved the loss of his son, Todd, Phillip’s love for his family never wavered. He was a proud grandfather to Colby, Cameron, Grant, and Reagan Horne; step-grandchildren, Tristan (Jessie) and Sydney Woodham; and step-great-grandchild, Boone Woodham. His brother, Van Horne, and sister-in-law, Carolyn, along with his nieces, Christy Slaughter (Chris) and Melissa Bozeman (Brian), also held a special place in his heart.
Phillip's legacy is one of unwavering patience and kindness; his family never saw him angry, and his even nature was a comfort to all. As a man who truly lived his faith, his life was a testament to the values he held dear: faith, family, and farming.
Phillip Horne's life was a portrait of service, love, and commitment. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on as a beacon of the joy and peace that come from a life well-lived.
A celebration of Phillip’s life will be held at 2:30pm on Sunday, December 28, 2025 at Corinth Free Will Baptist Church. Phillip will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the church on Sunday from 1:00pm-2:30pm.
