Nancy Jorene (Wilson) Welch

May 17, 1957 — August 1, 2023

Nancy Jorene Wilson Welch, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2023, in Hartford, AL. She was born on May 17, 1957, in Florence, AL, to the late Dr. Joe C. and Lorene Wilson. Nancy was a loving, gentle, and sassy woman, who dedicated her life to the service of others and the pursuit of knowledge.

Nancy's academic journey began at Huntington College at the tender age of 16, where she was awarded a presidential scholarship. She later transferred to the University of Alabama, furthering her education, and developing a lifelong love for Alabama football. Her and her son in law, Ashley, developed a special bond through their love for Alabama Football. Nancy bought them both matching Alabama Lazy Boys. Her passion for learning was only surpassed by her desire to help others, which she did as an Administrative Assistant for at-risk youth at Dothan City Schools. Nancy's commitment to her work was a testament to her passionate nature and her belief in the potential of every child.

Nancy had many interests that brought joy to her life. She was an avid cross-stitcher, creating beautiful works of art that will be cherished by her loved ones for years to come. Nancy also loved the ocean, finding peace in its vastness and beauty. Nancy's favorite holiday was Thanksgiving. Her love of cooking for her family was a highlight of each year, especially her dressing! Millie and Ashley will continue this tradition, in Nancy's memory. Nancy's dog, Skeeter, was her loyal companion, providing her with unconditional love and companionship. Skeeter continues to be loved by her granddaughter Millie and her family.

Nancy is survived by her loving daughter, Anna Kate Phillips (Ashley); her grandchildren, Millie Cortez (Jesse), Margaret Radley Phillips, Adalyn Inez Phillips, and Enman Cort Phillips; and her great-grandson, Beckett Ranger Cortez. She is also survived by her sisters, Myra McAbee and Mary Lynn Bankowski; her nephews, Bart Bankowski (Christine) and Drew McAbee (Emily); her nieces, Bethany Bankowski and Ashley McAbee; and a host of great-nieces and nephews. She also is survived by her extended Welch Family, whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law, Ski Bankowski.

Nancy's life was enriched by the relationships she formed with her special friends, including her mentor and friend, Dr. Franklin Jones. These friendships were a source of strength and comfort to her throughout her life.

Nancy's life was a testament to her loving and gentle spirit. She touched the lives of many with her kindness, leaving a lasting legacy of love and service. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she loved.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requested contributions be made to the GoFundMe Account set up in her memory.

One night I dreamed a dream.
As I was walking along the beach with my Lord.
Across the dark sky flashed scenes from my life.
For each scene, I noticed two sets of footprints in the sand,
One belonging to me and one to my Lord.

After the last scene of my life flashed before me,
I looked back at the footprints in the sand.
I noticed that at many times along the path of my life,
especially at the very lowest and saddest times,
there was only one set of footprints.

This really troubled me, so I asked the Lord about it.
"Lord, you said once I decided to follow you,
You'd walk with me all the way.
But I noticed that during the saddest and most troublesome times of my life,
there was only one set of footprints.
I don't understand why, when I needed You the most, You would leave me."

He whispered, "My precious child, I love you and will never leave you
Never, ever, during your trials and testings.
When you saw only one set of footprints,
It was then that I carried you."
