Mary "Ann" Fountain

February 17, 1943 — June 2, 2025

Mary Ann Fountain, affectionately known as Ann to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on February 17, 1943, in Cowarts, Alabama, Ann was a beacon of love and kindness throughout her 82 years of life.

Ann's early years were spent in the small town of Cowarts, where she was born at home to David and Ruth Vaughn. Her childhood was shared with her brothers, Arthur Joe, James Earl, Robert, and Johnny, all of whom preceded her in death. She attended Ashford High School, where she laid the foundations of a life characterized by hard work and dedication.

After graduating, Ann began her work journey at General Electric but soon found her calling in roles that allowed her to care for others. She worked at a local daycare, where her natural warmth made her a favorite among the children. Ann also served the community by working in the lunchroom at Wilson Street School, nurturing countless students with both food and affection. Her professional life culminated in her retirement from the purchasing department at Southeast Alabama Medical Center in 2005, where she was known for her efficiency and compassion.

Ann's commitment to her faith was evident through her longstanding membership at Bethel Baptist Church since 2002. Her involvement in the church community was a testament to her faith-filled spirit and her desire to serve others.

Ann was a fan of Alabama football and the Atlanta Braves. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, such as delving into a good book, solving crossword puzzles, and watching her favorite western movies. Her sweet, loving, and caring nature was a comfort to all who knew her.

Those who best knew Ann would describe her as sweet, loving, and caring. She poured herself into her family, friends, and anyone she met, leaving a legacy of generosity and kindness.

Ann leaves behind her loving husband, Jack Fountain, as well as her son, Scott Fountain (Starla); her daughter, Stephanie Downs (John); her cherished grandchildren, Meagan Scott (Cody) and David Downs (Emily); and her adored great-grandchild, Tucker Kyle Downs. Ann also leaves behind a host of nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Ann’s life will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2025 at 11am in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Andy Hunter officiating. She will be laid to rest in the Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
