Margaret Marie Smolen, affectionately known as Margaret, passed away peacefully on November 24, 2023, in Elba, Alabama. She was born on April 1, 1940, in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Joseph Baro and Susan M. Baro. She was also predeceased by her beloved sister, Susan Baro.

Margaret was a woman of intelligence and passion, known for her creativity and love for life. She pursued her passion for understanding human behavior by earning a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology from Northwestern University. Her thirst for knowledge and dedication to her chosen field was evident in her career. She served as an Office Manager and Journalist Editor at Purdue University, where she left a lasting impression. After several years of living in West Palm Beach, Florida, Margaret retired and relocated to Dothan, Alabama, where she spent the last 17 years of her life being close to her daughter, Tara Smolen.

Margaret's life was not only dedicated to her professional pursuits but also to her personal interests. After retirement, she developed a deep love for horses. This passion led her to show horses and even rescue a horse named SunDance who became her pride and joy. She also had a beloved donkey named Alfalfa. Independent in nature, she also expressed her creativity through color and paint artistry.

A vegetarian in her later years, Margaret was renowned for her culinary skills. She loved to cook and enjoyed sharing her delicious meals with friends and family. Her love for animals extended beyond horses. She had a special place in her heart for cats, particularly her cherished cat, Jill.

Margaret is survived by her loving daughter, Tara Smolen. She was a proud grandmother to Ashley Pierson, Michelle Smolen, Aaron Smolen, and Tiffany Lee, who will miss her dearly. She also leaves behind her dear friends, Maria Alonzo, and Susan Anderson, who will fondly remember her for her warmth, kindness, and vibrant spirit. Margaret leaves behind a legacy, including her 9 great-grandchildren.

Margaret's life was a testament to her resilience, intelligence, and passion. She was a beacon of creativity and left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her.
