Mac Fay Carpenter passed away on April 13, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama, at the age of 91.
He was born on September 2, 1934, in Echo, Alabama, to the late William Riley and Ollie Parish Carpenter. Mac grew up in Headland, Alabama, where he began to form the values of hard work, devotion, and integrity that would guide him throughout his life. After graduating from the University of Alabama with a bachelor’s degree, he built a distinguished career as a Certified Public Accountant, a profession that suited both his careful mind and his steadfast character.
Mac loved accounting and took great pride in the work he did for others. He owned his own firm before later moving to McDaniel and Company, where he continued to serve clients with skill, honesty, and dedication. His professional life reflected the same discipline and attention to detail that marked every part of his life. He was respected not only for his knowledge, but also for the calm, thoughtful manner in which he carried himself and cared for those around him. Throughout his career, he was recognized as a leader in his field, having served as past president of the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants and as past chairman of the State Board of Accountancy. He was also a member and past president of Kiwanis of Dothan, where he remained committed to serving his community.
Mac also served his country in the Army and Army Reserve, a chapter of life that reflected his sense of duty and willingness to serve beyond himself.
Faith was central to Mac’s life. He was a longtime member of First Baptist Church Dothan, where he served faithfully for many years. He was a deacon since 1969, served as finance chairman for over 20 years, and taught Sunday School for many years as well. His church family knew him as a dependable servant of God, a man who led by example and gave generously of his time, wisdom, and steady presence. His Christian faith shaped the way he lived, loved, and served.
Mac was a devoted family man who treasured the people closest to him. He is survived by his wife, Sylvia Hyatt Carpenter; his daughters, Jeanae Carpenter Freeman and her husband Gary, and Dana Carpenter Judy and her husband Brad; his grandchildren, Meghan Wright and her husband Ben, William Judy and his wife Anna, and Grayson Judy; and his great-grandson, Wesley Wright. He is also survived by his siblings, Martha Williams and her husband Jim, and Jackie Carpenter and his wife Penny. He was preceded in death by his siblings, Lewie Ray Carpenter and Gayla Carpenter McNab. He was also preceded in death by his parents, William Riley and Ollie Parish Carpenter.
Those who knew Mac will remember his deep love for his family and the quiet strength with which he supported them. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest joy came from being with the people he loved. He lived most of his adult life in Dothan, Alabama, where he made his home and built lasting relationships. Thirteen months ago, he moved to Birmingham to be closer to his daughters, a final chapter that reflected the same devotion to family that had guided his entire life.
Mac’s life was one of purpose, service, and faith. He was a man who valued responsibility, lived with humility, and left a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him. His family and friends will remember his warm heart, his thoughtful nature, and the steady example he provided through the years.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026, in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Taylor Rutland and Reverend Bob Gross officiating.
