Lula Mae Norwood, a cherished matriarch and friend to many, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on April 5, 1940, in Arlington, Georgia, Lula Mae's vibrant spirit and boundless love for life touched everyone she met. Her journey through life was marked by her devotion to family, her joy in simple pleasures, and her tireless work ethic.
Raised by her beloved grandparents, Ada and Tom Sapp, along with her cousin-sisters, Ada and Minnie, Lula Mae grew up alongside them, feeling the warmth of a close-knit family. Her brother, Eloise George, Jr. "Junior", along with her sisters, Irene Martin and Felecia, shared a lifetime of memories and laughter. Though she faced the loss of her parents, Margaret and Eloise George, Sr., her sisters Margaret "Sally" Pittman, Tina Wade, and Anita Lavette, as well as her brother, Mark George, the support of her brothers-in-law, Earnest Pittman, Charlie C. Wade, and Bobby Lavette, Lula Mae's strength and love never wavered.
Lula Mae's legacy is carried on through her loving daughter, Denise Bennett, and her adored grandchildren, Robert Ingram, Andrea Kelly, and Jarrod Kelly. Her great-grandchildren, Amiyah Knight, Kameron Knight, Troy Kelly, and Amir Kelly, will grow up hearing tales of their great-grandmother's zest for life and her ability to bring joy to every occasion.
Professionally, Lula Mae dedicated many years to domestic housekeeping, where she became an integral part of the Roney and Whitehead families. Her work was not just a job; it was a testament to her character, her reliability, and her commitment to excellence. Beyond her professional life, Lula Mae was an active participant in her community, always ready to lend a helping hand and share a kind word.
Lula Mae had a passion for life that was evident in her interests. She found great pleasure in the simple act of plundering outside, where she could be found tending to her flowers or simply enjoying the beauty of nature. She loved talking on the phone, keeping up with the latest news, and watching her favorite television shows. Lula Mae's love for her family was unparalleled, and her home was a welcoming haven where everyone was loved.
Known for her youthful spirit, Lula Mae never met a stranger. Her ability to strike up a conversation with anyone and her knack for sharing stories made her a beloved figure in her community. She had an infectious laugh and a penchant for gossip, which she shared in good spirits with her family and friends.

A celebration of Lula Mae’s life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at Sunset Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in Gates of Heaven Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday from 4:00pm-6:00pm at Sunset Funeral Home.
