Larry Jerome Sellers

October 16, 1945 — April 25, 2026

Larry Jerome Sellers, age 80, of Dothan, Alabama, passed away on April 25, 2026. He was born on October 16, 1945, in Hartford, Alabama, and lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a warm spirit that will be remembered by all who knew him.

He was the son of the late Rudolph Sellers and Robbie Sellers Merritt and his step father, Leander Merritt. Larry grew up farming, and that early way of life stayed with him throughout his years. He carried the values of honest labor and steady commitment into every part of his life, whether he was working at Hedstrom, working at Twitchell, or tending the land and keeping busy with the many responsibilities that came his way. Farming was not just something he did, it was part of who he was. He found purpose in a life built with his hands and guided by strong character.

Larry was a loving husband to Pat Sellers, his wife of 30 years. Together they shared a life filled with love, laughter, and the everyday moments that become the foundation of a lasting marriage. He was a devoted father to Tonya Sieg, Starla McLaney, Sherri (Scott) Metcalf, and Donna McCraney (Jim). He was also preceded in death by his children Bobby Gene Riley, Jr., Roger Riley, and Beverly Odom, and by his son-in-law Wayne McLaney. Larry took great pride in his family, and his love for them was steadfast and unconditional.

He is also survived by his brothers Jimmy Merritt and his sisters Dianne Tindell and her husband Randy, and Leigh Ann Thornton and her husband Jeff. He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather, blessed with a boatload of grandchildren and a double boatload of great-grandchildren who brought him great joy. His family was the center of his world, and he treasured every opportunity to spend time with them, share stories, and leave behind memories that will be carried forward for generations. Larry also leaves behind his special lifelong friend Huey Boutwell, his special aunt Jean Hobbs, and his two fur babies, Sammie and Max, who were dear companions to him.

Larry was known by those closest to him as a loving and caring man who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. He had a generous heart and a way of making people feel welcome and valued. He was also a big jokester, always ready with a laugh, a playful remark, or a story that could brighten the room. Beneath that sense of humor was a man who cared deeply and sincerely for others. He was also a perfectionist at everything he did, and he took pride in doing his best in every task, large or small.

In his free time, Larry loved fishing for bass and brim, and he enjoyed piddling in the yard. These simple pleasures brought him peace and reflected the kind of man he was. He appreciated the quiet satisfaction of a job well done and the beauty found in ordinary moments. Whether he was casting a line, working outside, or spending time with those he loved, Larry found contentment in a life lived with purpose and heart.

The family would like to express special thanks to Southern Care Hospice and nurse Kaylee for their kindness and compassionate care. Their support during Larry’s final days was deeply appreciated and will always be remembered with gratitude.

A celebration of Larry’s life will be held at 2:00pm on Wednesday, April 29, 2026 at Sunset Funeral Home with Brother Michael Gibson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to service time. Larry will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park.
