Joy Levene Johnson, lovingly known for her gentle heart and deep devotion to family, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2026, at the age of 83, in Dothan, Alabama, surrounded by those she loved most. Born on July 27, 1942, in Midland City, Alabama, Levene lived a life defined by love, kindness, and an unwavering commitment to her family.
Levene was the cherished daughter of Jesse and Dora Cunningham Godwin and grew up alongside her siblings Thomas, Paul, Myrtie Pearl, Lillian, Agnes, Sue, and Peggy. Though they preceded her in death, their memories remained close to her heart throughout her life.
She shared 67 beautiful years of marriage with the love of her life, Allen Kenneth Johnson. Together, they built a home rooted in faith, devotion, and unconditional love—a home where family always came first. Their love story was one of loyalty, patience, and quiet strength, serving as a lasting example to everyone who knew them.
Levene was a proud and devoted mother to her two sons, Allen Johnson and Greg Johnson, who were the greatest joys of her life. Her love only grew as her family expanded to include her grandchildren—Samantha, Amber, Ashley, and Miranda—and her treasured great-grandchildren, Harper, Londyn, Shaelynn, Kyler, Emirson, Alaina, and Jameson. She poured her heart into each of them, offering comfort, wisdom, and a love that never wavered.
Beyond her home, Levene shared her caring nature with her community through her work as a school lunch lady. She had a special way of making children feel seen and cared for, serving every meal with warmth, kindness, and a smile that made even an ordinary day brighter.
Levene found happiness in the simple things—family gatherings, shared laughter, and time spent with those she loved. Holidays were warmer, stories sweeter, and memories richer because she was there. Her presence had a way of making everyone feel at home.
A celebration of Levene’s life will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at 2pm in the Sunset Memorial Park Chapel with burial to follow in Newton City Cemetery. Bro. Andy Wood to officiate. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 4pm until 6pm at the funeral home.
