John Timothy Thompson, known affectionately as Tim by his friends and loved ones, passed away on July 23, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on January 1, 1956, in Miami, Florida, Tim's journey through life was marked by devotion to his family, a commitment to his craft, and a gentle, humorous spirit that endeared him to all who knew him.
Tim spent his formative years in the embrace of his loving parents, John E. and Jane B. Thompson, and alongside his siblings Joe, Jimmy, and Alice. He graduated from Ashford Academy in 1973, fondly remembered by his classmates for his quiet strength and reliability. Tim's passion for hands-on work led him to achieve a pipefitting certification in Albany, Georgia, setting the stage for a career that would span decades.
A proud member of the United Steel Workers Union Local 052, Tim dedicated himself to the craft of pipefitting and maintenance, serving with distinction at Georgia Pacific. His colleagues knew him as a man of great skill and greater humility, always ready to lend a helping hand or share a laugh, often punctuated by his signature dry wit. In 2021, after years of diligent service, Tim retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and the respect of all who worked alongside him.
Tim's heart belonged to his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Debbie Thompson, for 44 years until her passing. Together, they raised a family that included daughters Jessica Kamke (Casey) and Jamie Thompson (Aaron Curlee), and his late daughter Dana. His grandchildren, Zach and Jay Kamke, brought immeasurable joy to his life. Tim's siblings, Joe Thompson (Paula), Jimmy Thompson (Rhonda), and Alice (Wayne) Whitman, will remember him as the cornerstone of a family that was his pride and joy.
Tim's interests were as varied as they were heartfelt. He loved spending quality time with his family above all else. A regular at local thrift stores, he delighted in the thrill of the hunt, always on the lookout for the next great find to add to his collection. His grandchildren will cherish memories of their grandfather taking them to karate, where he watched with pride and contentment.
Tim was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes. His quiet, giving nature was felt by all, and his dry sense of humor could light up a room in the subtlest of ways. He will be remembered for these traits and for the unwavering love he showed to his family and friends.
As we bid farewell to Tim Thompson, we celebrate a life lived with integrity, love, and a touch of humor. His memory will continue to inspire and comfort those who were fortunate enough to know him. Tim's legacy is etched in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who were touched by his gentle, steadfast presence.
The family will gather at Sunset Funeral Home on Monday, July 28, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. to share memories and celebrate Tim's life.
