Joe Frank Hughes

January 20, 1946 — September 18, 2023

Dothan

Joe Frank Hughes, known affectionately as Joe, passed away peacefully in Dothan, Alabama on September 18, 2023. Born on January 20, 1946, in Pike County, Alabama, Joe lived a life marked by service, love, and faith.

Joe graduated high school in 1962 and soon after joined the Army National Guard. He proudly served his country for 42 years, including a deployment during Desert Storm. His courage and selflessness were evident in his military service, but they were also the hallmarks of his daily life.

Joe was a dedicated family man. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Faye Hughes, and their daughter, Phyllis (Tom) Gassett. His pride and joy were his two grandchildren, Seth and Leah Gassett, who he cherished spending time with. Also mourning his loss are his grand dog, Charlie, his sisters-in-law Margaret (Billy) Grubbs, Shirley (Richard) Smith, and Mildren (Oscar) Gulledge, along with several nieces and nephews.

A devout Christian, Joe was an active member of Calvary Baptist Church. His faith was not only evident in church involvement but also in his everyday interactions. He was always thinking of others, a testament to his selfless nature. As Albert Schweitzer once said, "The purpose of human life is to serve, and to show compassion and the will to help others." Joe embodied this sentiment, always ready to lend a helping hand.

In addition to his military and community service, Joe had a passion for woodworking and gardening. He found great pleasure in working with his hands, creating something out of nothing, and nurturing life from the earth. These hobbies were a reflection of his patient, loving nature. When he wasn't in his woodshop or garden, Joe could often be found watching his favorite Western movies, a pastime that brought him much joy.

Joe's involvement in his community extended beyond the church and the military. He was a member of the Pike County Shriners Fair for more than 25 years. His dedication to this organization demonstrated his commitment to his community and his innate desire to contribute to the betterment of those around him.

In remembering Joe, we recall a man who was both selfless and courageous. His dedication to his family, faith, and community was unwavering, and his love for life was contagious. Joe Hughes was a man who truly made a difference in the lives of those around him.
