Jeffrey Dean Helms, known affectionately as Jeff to his friends and loved ones, left this world on October 28, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama, leaving a legacy of love, laughter, and courage. Born in the heart of Enterprise, Alabama, on December 29, 1968, Jeff's early years in Bellwood, Geneva County, were filled with the joys of Southern life and the strong bonds of community.
Jeff's commitment to his country was evident through his dedicated service in the US Army from 1988 to 1996, followed by joining the Army National Guard and went on to retire from the National Guard US Air Force in 2009. His work ethic continued as he took on a role as a TI at Ft. Rucker at M1, subcontracted with AMSS, where his diligence and camaraderie were greatly valued by all who worked alongside him.
While stationed in Germany, Jeff's life took a romantic turn as he met the love of his life, Gabriele, also known as Gaby. Their love story was one for the ages, culminating in 35 years of marriage filled with shared adventures and unwavering support. Together, they welcomed their daughter, Jessica. His family was the cornerstone of his life, and he took immense pride in their achievements and happiness. His beloved wife, Gaby; his cherished daughter, Jessica; his devoted mother, Patsy; his caring brother, Jason; his loving sister, Donna; and his nephew, Jayce, survive Jeff. They will continue to honor his memory by living out the values he embodied. He also leaves behind his beloved pets, Toby, Ruby, Teddy, and Scout.
Jeff was a man whose presence was felt deeply by those around him. His humor was a beacon of light, and his reputation as a perpetual jokester brought smiles to many faces. His interests were diverse; he loved nothing more than spending a day fishing, marveling at aircraft, or caring for animals. As a good neighbor, Jeff's kindness touched the lives of many in his community, and his absence will be profoundly felt.
Jeff's journey through life was marked by his passion for education, as he attended Geneva County Schools, where he developed the foundations of his admirable work ethic and his commitment to community. His education and experiences shaped a man who was not only courageous in the face of adversity but also loving and kind in every aspect of his life.
A man of courage, loving in nature, and kind in spirit, Jeff's character was one of unwavering strength and gentle grace. He faced life's challenges with a brave heart and met everyday moments with a loving touch. Though he was preceded in death by his father, C. W. Helms, his brother, Donnie Helms, and a sister who passed away in her childhood, Jeff's legacy is one of enduring love and the joy of living.
A celebration of Jeff's life will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with military honors to follow. This will be a time for friends and family to gather, share memories, and honor the man who touched so many lives. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1-2 pm, before the service.
As we say goodbye to Jeffrey Dean Helms, we are reminded of the laughter he shared, the love he gave, and the courage he showed. His spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him, and his memory will be cherished forever. Jeff's story does not end here; it lives on in the hearts of his family, his friends, and all the lives he touched.
