James Matthew Wright, known to family and friends as Matthew, passed away on October 21, 2026, in Ozark, Alabama, at the age of 64.
Matthew was born on February 22, 1962, in Metropolis, Illinois, and he carried the values of hard work, faith, and devotion throughout his life. He was a man whose journey took him from the ranching life of his early years to the river, and later to the pulpit, where he served others with humility and conviction. His life reflected a steady commitment to responsibility, service, and love for those around him.
In his earlier years, Matthew worked as a ranch hand and foreman in Florida, where he developed the strong work ethic and practical wisdom that would guide him throughout his life. He later became an engineer on the river tow boating, a role that suited his determination, skill, and appreciation for the outdoors. The river became a meaningful part of his story, and he took pride in the work he did there. His years in tow boating eventually led him into a new calling, and from 2001 to 2022, he served as a pastor in several churches. In that role, he shared his faith, encouraged others, and devoted himself to spiritual leadership with sincerity and compassion.
Matthew was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Sheila Wright; his daughters, LaCinda Newberry and her husband Shawn, and Nikita Boling and her husband James; and his beloved grandchildren, Garrett Newberry, Gabrielle Becknes and her husband Isaiah, Gideon Boling, Elias Boling, and Tyler Boling. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Wright; his sister, Diane Griffith; several nieces and nephews; and his close friend, Craig Carver. His family was the center of his life, and he treasured every moment spent with them.
Those who knew Matthew will remember his love for the outdoors and the simple pleasures that brought him joy. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and he found peace in being outside, surrounded by nature. He was also known for his appreciation of bonfires and time spent with friends, where good conversation and fellowship were always welcome. Matthew had a curious mind and a deep interest in reading, including true crime, Greek, Hebrew, and Arabic Bible studies. His desire to learn reflected both his thoughtful nature and his lifelong commitment to understanding the world and the Scriptures more deeply.
Matthew lived as an outdoors person in every sense, but he was also a man of faith and family who valued meaningful connection above all else. He loved his family deeply and was proud of the people they became. His presence was steady, his words were often wise, and his life left an impression on many who had the privilege of knowing him. Whether he was working, studying, preaching, or simply spending time with those he loved, Matthew brought a sense of purpose and authenticity to all he did.
He will be remembered with love and gratitude by all whose lives he touched. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished, the churches he served, the work he accomplished, and the faith he shared. Though he will be greatly missed, the memory of James Matthew Wright will remain a lasting source of comfort and inspiration to those who knew and loved him.
