Gary Wayne Potter

April 16, 1956 — January 15, 2024

Dothan

Gary Wayne Potter, known affectionately as Gary to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in his hometown of Dothan, Alabama, on January 15, 2024, at the age of 67. Born on April 16, 1956, to the late Johnnie Potter and Dorothy McLain Potter, Gary's life was one of service, love, and simple pleasures that left a lasting impact on all who knew him.

Gary was a proud graduate of Dothan High School, where he formed many lifelong friendships and established himself as a respected member of the community. After high school, he honorably served his country in the Army for two years, a time that instilled in him a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life. Upon returning to civilian life, Gary channeled his hardworking spirit into a successful career as a self-employed painter, a trade that allowed him to express his artistic side while providing for his family.

Gary's love for the outdoors was no secret. He found joy and tranquility in fishing, a hobby that allowed him to bask in the serenity of nature. His happiest moments were often found in the quiet anticipation of a catch, surrounded by the beauty of Alabama's landscapes.

Family was the cornerstone of Gary's life. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories for his son, Damion Potter; his daughter, Dominique Potter McIntyre and her husband, Dexter; and his beloved grandchildren, Dayana, Kyrei, Karter, and Phillip Kash. Gary's siblings, Winifred Potter Danzey, Lavonda Potter, Barbara Potter Kirkland, and Johnny Potter, III, will remember their brother with fondness and pride. His brother-in-law, Douglas Ramsey, and his two special friends, Carla Andrews and Myrna Williams, also survive him, each holding dear the unique bond they shared with Gary.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Gloria Potter Ramsey; his brother, Charles Williams; his brother-in-law, Marvin Danzey; and his sister-in-law, Deloris Cummings Potter. Each of these individuals played a significant role in shaping Gary's life, and their memories will continue to be honored through the stories and laughter shared among those who loved them.

Gary's life was a testament to the values of dedication, family, and joy in the simple things. His infectious smile and generous spirit will be sorely missed by his family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. As we say goodbye to Gary Wayne Potter, we take comfort in knowing that his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched.
