Fannie Bennett, a cherished matriarch and beacon of love in her community, peacefully entered into eternal rest on June 9, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on September 29, 1936, in Greenwood, Alabama, Fannie's life was a testament to the power of love, family, and faith.
Fannie was the loving heart of her family, having shared 68 wonderful years of marriage with her late husband, LC Bennett. Together, they built a legacy of warmth and kindness that will live on through their children, Martha Anderson, Brenda Bennett, CL Bennett, Raymond Bennett, Rosie Herring, Janice Coleman, Dorothy Ross, and Jacquelyn Bennett. Her spirit will also be cherished by her adoring grandchildren, Rionte Kirkland, Ladarius Anderson, Anthony Bennett, Vanteriese Massaliene, Rekeyias Anderson, Malik Ross, Shaquel Coleman, Kiana Salazar, Nikaylah Ross, Ne-Khael Ross, Christopher Bennett, Brenda McGriff, and Willie McGriff, as well as a host of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren who were the light of her life.
Fannie was the beloved sister of Barbara Newton, Nellie Sanders, Delores McGriff, Ike McGriff, Eddie McGriff, and Moses McGriff. She was preceded in passing by her parents, Sam and Lula Mae McGriff, her brothers Joe Edward McGriff and Johnny McGriff, her sisters Martha Francis and Jesse McClyde, her son Willie McGriff, and her infant son who was taken too soon. Her memory will be a treasure not only to her immediate family but also to the many nieces, nephews, friends, and family members whose lives she touched.
Fannie dedicated her life to caring for her family and raising her children, a role she embraced with every fiber of her being. She was the epitome of a homemaker, whose hands were never idle. Fannie's sassy nature was paired with an undeniable love for gardening, both flowers and vegetables, which reflected the care and attention she gave to everything and everyone in her life.
Also known as "Doll" to those who held her dear, Fannie's presence was a constant in Houston County, where she lived her entire life. Her faith was nurtured and shared within the congregations of Antioch and Macedonia Church, where she was a devoted member.
Fannie's love for the outdoors was evident to all who knew her. She could often be found outside, tending to her garden or simply enjoying the beauty of nature. Her caring hands also crafted quilts that wrapped her loved ones in warmth, just as her kindness wrapped them in love. Fannie's baking was legendary, particularly her cakes, which were a sweet embodiment of her generous spirit.
Described by many as loving, kind, and generous, Fannie's legacy is one of unwavering devotion to her family and community. Her life was a beautiful quilt, each patch representing the love and care she gave to those around her. She will be deeply missed, but her memory will continue to inspire and guide us.
A memorial service will be held at 11am on Friday, June 13, 2025 in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Argan Carroll officiating.
