Edward "Ed" Timothy Hughes

September 17, 1946 — December 9, 2025

Edward Timothy Hughes, known affectionately to all as Ed, departed this world on December 9, 2025, at the age of 79, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on September 17, 1946, in Los Angeles, California, Ed's journey through life was marked by valor, adventure, and an unwavering love for his family and friends.

Ed's commitment to service was evident early on when he joined the Marines as a young man. His time in Vietnam not only tested his mettle but also sparked a lifelong passion for aviation. After witnessing the skill of helicopter pilots in the midst of war, Ed set his sights on the sky, vowing, "I want to have shiny boots." This determination carried him through over twenty years of dedicated military service, where he excelled in flight school and earned numerous flight medals. His career took him to Korea for a year and saw him retire from the Army not once, but twice, before finally retiring from DAC.

Despite the demands of his career, Ed's heart always belonged to his family. He leaves behind his special friend, Cindy Miller; his son, Bill Hughes (Jena); his daughter, Janna Morrow (William); his cherished grandchildren, Holly Marler (Matthew), Tray Morrow (Lisa), Jordan Morrow (Gunner), and Chase Hughes (Ashleigh); and his great-grandchild, Heidi, with another, Haven, on the way. He also leaves behind his brother, Terry Hughes (Rod), and sister, Mary McCreary, who will miss his presence dearly. Ed was predeceased by Janet Hughes, the beloved mother of his children, as well as his parents, Thomas Hughes and Patricia James, and his stepfather, Spence James.

After retirement, Ed's adventurous spirit took him to every continent, fulfilling his dream to travel and experience the world. His love for motorcycles never waned, and his joy was most palpable when his family gathered together, sharing stories and making memories. Ed also cherished his time with the "old guys" group, a band of friends with whom he shared many of life's ups and downs.

Ed's legacy is one of courage, love, and the pursuit of dreams. His life's story serves as an inspiration to all who knew him, a reminder of the importance of setting goals and the joy of achieving them, all while holding one's family close. Edward Timothy Hughes lived a life replete with purpose and passion, and though he has taken his final flight, his memory will soar in the hearts of his loved ones forever.

In grateful recognition of Ed’s faithful service to our country, military honors will be rendered at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, December 18, 2025, at Sunset Memorial Park.
