Durwood Ard, affectionately known as Durwood to all who knew him, passed away on December 12, 2023, in Newton, Alabama. Born on March 20, 1953, in Napier Field, Alabama, Durwood's early years were spent in Dothan where he attended Dothan High School. His life was a testament to the power of kindness, dedication, and the simple joys of a life well-lived.
Durwood spent the last two decades of his life residing in the Wicksburg area, where he became a well-known and respected figure in the community. His career spanned over 40 years in the family plumbing business, where he was not only a talented plumber and electrician but also a hard worker known for his generosity. Durwood's big heart often led him to give away much of his time, and he would frequently not charge clients for the full time spent on a job, a testament to his selfless nature.
Family was the cornerstone of Durwood's life. He is survived by his loving sons, Christopher (Katie) Ard, Luke Mills, and Scott Mills; his daughters, Jennifer Howell and Kacee Mills; his cherished grandchildren, Makayla Mills, Austin Wright, Hunter Howell, Destinee Ard, Jasmine Ard, Nevaeh Roselle, and Colby Majors; his brother, Jimmy Ard; and his sisters, Mary (Tom) Hicks and Martha Robinson. Durwood also leaves behind several adoring nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Durwood's zest for life was evident to all who knew him. His interests and personality were as expansive as the Alabama sky. Known for being very dependable and easy-going, Durwood would give you anything he had without a second thought. Growing up, he was recognized as a free spirit, and this spirit stayed with him throughout his life. He loved fishing at his brother Jimmy's pond and cherished being outdoors with nature, finding solace and joy in the simple act of casting a line.
His character was the embodiment of generosity, handiness, and selflessness. These words not only describe Durwood but also represent the values he lived by every day. He was the sort of man who would go out of his way to help a neighbor in need, or to fix a problem that no one else could solve.
Durwood's love for life and the people in it was unbounded. Whether he was sharing a laugh, lending a hand, or imparting wisdom, he did so with a full heart. His presence was a gift to those who had the pleasure of knowing him, and his memory will be a treasure that continues to inspire and guide.
