Dorothy Pearce Johnson died on June 16, 2026, at the age of 93. Born in 1932 in Houston County, Alabama, to parents Alto and Virgie Pearce, she lived a full and rewarding life as a wife, mother, homemaker, teacher and volunteer. She was married to Harold T. Johnson for 60 years until his death in 2011. She remained in their home in Dothan, Alabama for an additional twelve years, and moved to one of their earlier homes, Statesboro, Georgia, in 2023. There she enjoyed living at Bethany Cottages and sharing many new friendships. In her final days, her life was greatly enhanced by several caregivers, and her family especially thanks caregivers Urssula, Tina and Tracie, and their coordinator Sheila Hotchkiss.
Dorothy was co-valedictorian of her 1950 class at Cottonwood High School, earned degrees from Georgia Southern College and Georgia Southwestern College, and was a respected and beloved elementary school teacher. She taught in Georgia school systems in Savannah, Americus and Blakely, where she was named Teacher of the Year. Upon retirement, she dedicated her time to many interests, including church groups and activities, travel, book clubs, bridge clubs, enjoying a lake house and her legendary hospitality. Her cooking and entertaining were enjoyed by many people, using delicious recipes that had been passed down through generations of her family, and her invitations were eagerly anticipated. Her lavish Christmas decorations were especially loved, and were featured in photographic spreads in several magazines.
She is survived by her three sons and their families: Tim and Kathryn of Charlotte, NC, their daughter Gail and Tim Fischer and their children Wesley and Evelyn of Charlotte, and their daughter Meredith Johnson and Tim Flaspoehler of Atlanta, GA; Terre of Statesboro, GA, his daughter Cameron Johnson and Zach Thompson and daughter Penelope Thompson of Dothan, AL, daughter Kelly and Jeremy Baxley and their sons Bennett and Beau of Port St. Joe, FL, and son Christopher and Hannah and their daughters Amelia and Callie of Huntsville, AL; and Tony and Susan of Lafayette, LA, and son Jason and Nicole of Shreveport, LA, son Jeremy and Daniela and their children Phillip and Ana of Baton Rouge, LA, and daughter Jennifer and Alex Villier, of Lafayette, LA.
