Dorothy "Jean" Edge

October 23, 1946 — August 23, 2025

Dorothy Jean Edge passed away on August 23, 2025, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on October 23, 1946, in Springfield, Ohio, Jean's life was a tapestry of devotion and interests, woven with the threads of family, animals, and travel.

Jean's journey through life was shared with her beloved husband of 56 years, John H. Edge, who cherished her companionship and unwavering support. Their love story began on a blind date at a Johnny Mathis concert in 1967, and it blossomed into a partnership filled with mutual respect, laughter, and adventure. Together, they raised their son, Vince, who with his wife Amy, gave Jean the joy of being a grandmother to Hannah (married to David Szell) and Lowry Edge. She loved being a great-grandmother to Francie Szell.

Jean's early years as a Registered Nurse showcased her innate ability to care for others. After welcoming her son into the world, Jean shifted her focus to her family, channeling her nurturing energy into being a great mother and a wonderful wife.

An avid reader, Jean's love for fiction novels was matched only by her passion for horses. She enjoyed trail riding with her horse, Willow. Her love for animals extended to her dogs, who were adored companions throughout her life.

Jean's interests were as diverse as they were engaging. She was a dedicated fishing partner to John, mastering the fly rod. Her creative talents were evident in her needlepoint work, creating cherished afghans for her granddaughters and in her skill as a master gardener, which made her home a sanctuary of beauty and comfort. Jean's love for travel brought her many memorable experiences.

Jean was preceded in death by her brother, Tom Thorne, and by her sister, Louise Ruiz.

Jean Edge's legacy is one of love for her family. Her ability to make a house a home, to turn a simple thread into a tapestry, and to cast a line into the waters of companionship, will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.

There will be no formal service at this time, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made to Wiregrass Pet Rescue and Adoption Center in Jean’s honor.
