Don Allen Walker (Dothan, AL) was born April 23, 1937, the son of Josephine and George Walker, and grew up in Bessemer, AL.
Mr. Walker attended St. Aloysius School in Bessemer, Al beginning at the age of 3 years old where he was affectionately known as “Donny Boy.” He graduated from Bessemer High School in 1955. Mr. Walker began working at the age of six years old selling food from a cart marked “Don’s Tamales” on the sidewalk outside of the Post Office in Bessemer, AL. Mr. Walker was a professional dancer with the Birmingham Ballet Company. He worked behind the counter making milk shakes in his teens and worked at US Steel as a young adult. Mr. Walker was transferred to Dothan, AL in 1969 when he began working for the Pilsbury Company. He concluded his work career as a guard at Farley Nuclear Plant retiring in 2000.
Don Walker was a very active member of St. Columba Catholic Church in Dothan. He was the last surviving founding member of the Dothan Chapter of the Knights of Columbus where he held many offices over the decades. He sang as a cantor and in the choir at St Columba for many years under multiple directors. He was one of the first lay minister of Extra Ordinary Communion selected in Dothan. His many humanitarian efforts included sponsoring a family of 17 in 4 generations of Vietnamese fleeing communism in the 1970’s. He remained close to this family and their descendants.
Mr. Walker passed away from Covid related complications on September 19, 2026. Mr. Walker is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Frances Walker, his children Paula Jo Kucich (spouse Umberto Kucich), Chris Walker (spouse Jennifer Walker), and Sarah June Bright. Also survived by his grandchildren, Margaret Neas (spouse Brian Neas), Konnor Bright (spouse Alyssa Bright), and Veronica Walker. Mr. Walker also has great-grandchildren Ben, Andrew, Theodore, and Luca.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 pm on Monday, September 14, 2026, at St. Columba Catholic Church in the Sanctuary. The family will be receiving friends at Sunset Memorial Park on Sunday evening from 4:00pm-5:45pm. A rosary prayer service will be held on Sunday at 5:45pm-6:00pm following the visitation. Don will be laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
