Derrick Whitehead, a cherished son, brother, uncle, and friend, passed away on January 29, 2026, in Dale County, Alabama, at the age of 40. Born on July 7, 1985, in Barbour County, Alabama, Derrick's life was one of warmth, laughter, and the simple joys that come from the love of family and the passion for one's interests.
Derrick was the beloved son of Teresa Marshall and her husband Kenneth. He grew up in a large and loving family, surrounded by his siblings Schela Whitehead, A'shanta McClendon, Mariah Johnson, Destiny Mency, Deriel Mency, Jeffery Whitehead, Dedrick McClendon, Royrecus Womack, Jaheim Johnson, and Colby Richardson. Derrick's life was further enriched by the presence of his great uncles Jimmy, Jesse, and Roy Herring, and his great aunties Vera McRae, Elouise Rumph, and Gussie Avery. His aunts Barbara McClendon, Felecia Parker-Neal, Charnese Blackmon, Monica Whitehead, Lenora Spratt, Tracey Whitehead-Price, and his uncles Charlie Whitehead Jr. and Timothy McClendon, also played significant roles in his life.
Derrick's family tree extended to his adoring nephews, Jeremiah and Isaiah Deleon, and his nieces, Sanaa Blackmon, Haylee, and Brooklyn Conner, Ma'Kensley Riley, and Ma'Riyah Edwards. Each of them held a special place in his heart, and he cherished the moments they spent together. His special Godmother, Bobbie Ree Thompkins, was a guiding light throughout his life.
Derrick's spirit was never dampened, he was a passionate football fan, and his enthusiasm for the game was infectious. He also found great joy in the virtual worlds of video games, especially the 2K series, where he spent many happy hours.
Derrick's life was a testament to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. He faced his challenges with grace and a positive outlook that inspired those around him. His laughter was a balm to the soul, and his presence was a source of comfort to his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charlie Whitehead, Ida Bell Herring, Woodrow McClendon Jr., and his great-grandparents, Alvin Victor Herring and Annie Pearl. The legacy of love and family they instilled in Derrick will continue to live on through the lives of those he touched.
The family of Derrick Whitehead invites those who were touched by his life to join in celebrating his memory. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, January 6, 2026, at Sunset Funeral Home. Friends and loved ones are welcome to gather and share stories of Derrick's impact on their lives one hour prior to the services. Following the ceremony, Derrick will be laid to rest in Sunset Memorial Park.
