Dennis St. John

June 29, 1947 — February 13, 2024

Dothan

Dennis "Denny" St. John, a man of honor and dedication, passed away peacefully on February 13, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama. Born on June 29, 1947, in Erie, Pennsylvania, Denny's journey through life was marked by his steadfast commitment to his family, his country, and his community.

Denny's early years in Erie laid the foundation for a life characterized by service and hard work. His 27-year tenure in the United States Army saw him rise to the rank of Sergeant Major, a testament to his leadership and resilience. After retiring from the military, Denny continued to serve as a dedicated employee at the Post Office, where he worked for 13 years before retiring once more. His colleagues remember him as a man who brought integrity and a strong work ethic to every task he undertook.

Survived by his loving wife of nearly five years, Sonya St. John, Denny's legacy of love and strength lives on through his family. He was a father to Denise Hammons (John), Le'Anna Paul (Joshua), Myranda Weathersby, and David Weathersby. His joy was multiplied as a grandfather to Nathan Hammons, whose adventures and accomplishments brought immense pride to Denny's heart.

Denny's life was enriched by the companionship of his siblings, Colleen (Joe), Sissy, Brenda, Ricky, and Jeffery. Each family gathering was a testament to the close-knit bonds he helped foster throughout the years. His love for his dogs, Bailey, Jenny, and Jill, also knew no bounds, as they were not only pets but cherished members of the St. John family.

Though he is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Betty St. John, and his first wife, Rita St. John, the memories and values they shared continue to inspire all who knew Denny.

Those who knew Denny will remember him as a man with a big heart, often perceived as intimidating, yet possessing a charm that endeared him to many—most of all to his wife, Sonya, who was the recipient of his unwavering love and affection. His hobbies, such as woodworking and making furniture, were not just pastimes but expressions of his desire to create and care for his family. The pieces he crafted were more than furniture; they were symbols of his love and dedication to his loved ones.

Denny's life was a portrait of a man who took great pride in taking care of his family. His presence was a source of strength and comfort, and his influence will be felt for generations to come. His absence will leave a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his spirit will continue to guide and inspire.

A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, March 1, 2024 at 3:00pm in the Sunset Memorial Park Chapel. The family will gather in the reception center after the service to visit with friends and family.
