David Wayne Williams, age 81, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, in Birmingham, Alabama. He was born on June 5, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Bernard and Jeanne Beck Williams.
David pursued higher education with dedication and distinction, earning his undergraduate degree from Emory University before completing medical school at Tulane University. He devoted his professional life to caring for others as an emergency room physician, a role that reflected both his sharp intellect and steady compassion. His commitment to healing left a lasting impression on countless patients, colleagues, and friends.
A proud veteran, David honorably served in the United States Army from 1969 to 1973. His service was an important chapter of his life and one he carried with quiet pride. He was a member of the Roman Catholic faith.
Outside of medicine, David had a wide range of interests. He enjoyed history, listening to records, playing computer games, and meticulously recreating model historical tanks. He was especially known for his dry sense of humor, which brought smiles and levity to those around him.
David was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ines Piedad Williams, whom he married in 1987 and who passed away in 2014. He is survived by his children, Jennifer Williams and Elizabeth Williams; his sister, Julie Wurst; and extended family members Steve Wurst, Dana Wurst Fluharty, and Robert Wurst.
The family extends special thanks to the staff of Fair Haven Assisted Living and Skilled Nursing Facility, as well as the medical team at UAB, for their compassionate care and support.
David will be remembered for his dedication to healing, his dry wit, and the meaningful impact he made on the lives of those who knew and loved him. A memorial service date will be announced at a later time.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 11am in the Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Deacon Joe Mueller officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a local animal shelter of one’s choosing in David’s honor.
