David Gordon Alexander, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 12, 2023, at the age of 83 in his hometown of Dothan, Alabama. Known affectionately to all as David, he embodied the virtues of love, thoughtfulness, and selflessness throughout his remarkable life.
Born on July 9, 1940, in Dothan, David's early years were shaped by the warmth and camaraderie of a close-knit community. He was a proud graduate of Dothan High School, where he laid the foundations for a life characterized by dedication and service. David's work ethic was evident from his early days at Alexander Wholesale, a family business where he worked alongside his parents. His career later transitioned to National Cash Register, where he remained until his retirement in 1993. Ever passionate about his work, David embarked on a second career in commercial real estate at Fletcher Moore Realty and ultimately Lan Darty Realty, where he was actively involved until his final days.
David's personal life was equally rich and fulfilling. He married the love of his life, Charolette, on August 9, 1960, and together they embarked on a journey filled with love and mutual respect. Their union was blessed with two devoted children, Mike (Carrie) Alexander and Cindy (Lee) Roberds, who in turn gave him the joy of being 'Granddaddy' to Jordan (Daniel) Hendrix, Blaze (Blake) Miranda, Sarah Alexander, David Martin, and Alex Fair. David's legacy continued to grow with the arrival of his great-grandchildren, Evan Hendrix, Cole Price, Ryan Price, and Everett Miranda, who all held a special place in his heart. David also held dear his several nieces and nephews, who will fondly remember his guiding presence.
A man of many interests, David's passion for his 1957 Buick was a testament to his appreciation for the classics, and it was in that very car that he courted Charolette, creating memories that would last a lifetime. Described by those who knew him as the finest man one could meet, David was a pillar of strength and reliability. His willingness to lend a helping hand was unmatched, and his presence was a source of comfort and stability to many.
In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." David lived by this philosophy, touching lives and making a lasting impact on his community. His legacy is one of kindness and generosity, and his memory will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him.
A celebration of David's life will be held at 4 pm on Friday, December 15, 2023, at Sunset Funeral Home Chapel, with John McCallister officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service, from 3-4 pm, offering a time for those who knew and loved David to share memories and support one another in remembrance of a truly remarkable man.
