Daniel Lee Watkins, a resident of Newton, passed away on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at a local hospital. He was 51.
Funeral services will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, January 22, 2017 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-3 pm.
Daniel was born on December 13, 1965 in Ft. Eustus, Virginia and lived the early years of his life there. He moved to Newton in 1969 and was a 1985 graduate of Dale County High School where he played football and was known as “Big D”. Daniel attended Wallace Technical College and received a degree in heating and air conditioning. He would become a welder and was employed with Utility Trailers in Enterprise for several years and later with Southeast Alabama Medical Center. Daniel loved his nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews, they called him Unk. He was an avid Auburn Football fan. Daniel was a member of Harvest Church and attended Bethel Baptist Church in his childhood.
Survivors include his parents, James and Martha Watkins; his 2 brothers, Jimmy (Mique)Watkins and Mitchell (Carol) Watkins; his 2 sisters, Kay (Bobby) Thomas and Ilene Livingston; his nieces and nephews, Adam and Curt Thomas, Matthew Watkins, Crystal Ludlum, Tara Watkins, Brannon Livingston, Clinton Watkins, Leah Powell, Madison Watkins, and Kalen Kosik; his 17 great-nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jimmy Watkins, Mitchell Watkins, Curt Thomas, Matthew Watkins, Clinton Watkins, and Luke Ludlum.
