Paul was born on March 12, 1947. He graduated from Semmes High School near Mobile in 1965 and later attended the University of South Alabama, where he served in the Navy ROTC and earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry. After graduation, Paul completed his basic training in Michigan before attending Officer Candidate School in Orlando, FL. He proudly served in the U.S. Navy for six years aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN 65). During his service, he received the National Defense Service Medal, a Navy Unit Commendation, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device, and the First Good Conduct Award.
Following his military service, Paul joined the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, where he served as a nuclear specialist for more than 38 years and met his future wife. He retired in 2015. The many friendships that began during those years brought him great joy throughout his life.
Paul had a personal relationship with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ—one that began early and grew into a deep and complete trust in God’s will for his life. He was a quiet but passionate man who loved his wife, Shirley, with all his heart. His steadfast nature and quick wit were blessings to all who knew him. Paul enjoyed spending time at the beach with family and friends, watching Alabama football, and working alongside Shirley on their farm. He will be deeply missed.
Mr. Peyer was preceded in death by his parents, Albert Paul Peyer, Jr. of Syracuse, NY, and Janie Dolores Peyer of Mobile, AL.
Surviving relatives include his beloved wife of 44 years, Shirley Walker Peyer; their special friend, Gina Johnson; their children: Shane Johnson (Samantha), James Aldridge, Christopher Peyer, and Victoria Peyer; and his siblings: Karen Peyer Langley, Steven Peyer (Ashley), Debra Peyer Reynolds (Frank), and Emily Peyer Hall (Keith). He is also survived by two special grandchildren, Walker Johnson and Stacian Guilford, along with an extended family of additional grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Paul also leaves behind his cherished pets—Munchkin, Sookie, Diva, Neely, and Poppy.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to the team at Southeast Health, Southeast Oncology and Susan with SouthernCare Hospice. Also, to thank everyone for their prayers, visits, and calls, to Shane for being right by his side and to Neva Watson, a lifelong friend, for keeping everyone informed.
