John Henry Chafin, Jr.

John Henry Chafin, Jr. known affectionately as John, passed away on March 5, 2024, at the age of 84 in Dothan, Alabama. He was born in Birmingham, Alabama and spent his formative years in Robertsdale/Foley, Alabama. He graduated from the University of Alabama, where he honed his analytical skills that would serve him well throughout his life and began his unwavering love of Alabama football.
John's professional journey was diverse in nature. After serving his country in the US Navy, he embarked on a successful career in accounting as a Certified Public Accountant. His professional career started at Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. in Birmingham, AL. Then he worked at various companies in Albuquerque, NM and then went back to Alabama where he retired as a finance professional.
In his personal life, John was known for his sharp mind and servant's heart. John was the son of a Baptist Preacher and he carried with him the values instilled in him from a young age. He enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, such as working out, playing cards, and reading books. He was almost never seen without wearing an Alabama Crimson Tide shirt and traveled frequently to visit family and attend his grandchildrens' events.
John is survived by a loving family who will continue to cherish his memory: his sons, John "Les" Chafin (Jeanette) and Lawrence E. Chafin (Wendy); his daughter, Cynthia Wallwork (Don); his grandchildren, Erin Neely, Isabelle Chafin, Jonathan Chafin, Emily Chafin, Tanner Chafin, Adam Chafin, Jacob Wallwork, Caleb Wallwork, Samuel Wallwork; his brother, Larry Chafin (Laura); his sister, Jackie Byrd; and several nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Henry Chafin, Sr. and Hazel Godrey Chafin, by his sister, Charlotte Walker.
John's life was marked by love, laughter, and pursuit of excellence. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and unwavering commitment to his family and friends. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know him. John Chafin's story is one of a life well-lived and he will be remembered with affection and respect.
