Obituary

Reverend Patrick Maher, of St Columba Catholic Church, Dothan, entered eternal life peacefully on Friday afternoon November 24th, 2017 surrounded by relatives and friends.

Born in Ireland on November 2nd, he was the eleventh child of 12, 8 girls and 4 boys. Following ordination as a Catholic priest in June of 1953 at St Patrick’s Carlow College, Father Maher came to the then Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham. His first assignment was to St Jude’s, Montgomery as assistant pastor. In 1958, he was assigned to St Columba, Dothan. Other assignments included, St John, Ozark; St John, Enterprise; St Thomas, Chickasaw; St Joseph, Prattville; St Bede’s, Montgomery; Our Lady of Lourdes, Mobile; St Thomas-by-sea, Orange Beach; St Rose of Lima, Mon Luis Island. At age 83, he returned to St Columba as a priest in residence in 2010 and there he learned Spanish in order to celebrate Mass for the Spanish community. He was much loved and appreciated by the people whom he served throughout the Archdiocese. He is remembered especially for his constant reminder of God’s unconditional love and his famous saying, ‘God is madly in love with you!’

Truly, he was regarded as a man of God and of the people for the 64 years of his priestly ministry.

Along the journey of life, he lived what he preached, faithful to the message of the gospel. May he now enjoy the fullness of life in God’s eternal home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Archbishop Thomas Rodi at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 2, 2017 at St. Columba Catholic Church. A Rosary will be prayed at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, December 1, 2017 in the St. Columba Catholic Church Chapel and the visitation will continue until 8:00 p.m. and will close with the Office of the Dead.

I will miss you Father Maher. I have known you ever since you came back to Dothan and I have confided in you and confessed to God through you and when I walked in I always felt small, when I walked out I always had the confidence to be the man I should be. Father Maher was special. He was a good, holy priest. I was humbled to be baptized by him in 1980 and to call him a brother priest 36 years later. Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him.

As former parishioners of Father Maher's from St. Bede's, We are sure God is "madly in love with him" in His heavenly kingdom. Fr. Maher was a wonderful priest and spiritual leader when he served us at St. Bede's and we missed him after he left. It is nice to know he was able to spread his message of God's love for so long. May he rest in peace.

Tears in my eyes as I read this! Really feel like my family and I are better people just by having known him. I know our parish (St. Bede) felt that way about him too. Father Maher was truly a beautiful soul who made a huge difference in the lives of the people he touched. He constantly reminded everyone that God was madly in love with them. What a difference maker on this earth. RIP, Father Maher. You will be missed by many. ❤️🌹

Father Maher had several impact moments on our family from 1979 all the way to the times we'd visit down Dothan way in the later years. He once told me that talking to people was like talking to Jesus so when someone was present he put away what he was doing and made a point to talk with them. He had a passion for the poor and was a man of few possessions. He will be missed but his actions and love of Christ will live in those he touched. You are home now father and thank you for being a Good Shepherd.

Thank you Father for all that you did for our mother, our family, the parish, the community and the Church. God could not be more pleased with you. Everyday you did what you said was one of your many missions, everyone you met knew God was madly in love with them. What else could He want. Many people were brought to him through you. Our deepest condolences go out to Father's family. Please know that he was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

It was a true honor serving as an alter boy for Father Maher during his years with St. John's in Enterprise. I remember well his guidance in our transition from Latin to English in the '60s - for all of us as parishoners and alter boys. My family enjoyed his personal visits at our home as well as working around the rectory and church. A true friend for all, so caring and supportive, and inspirational for us to strive for better Christian living!

Truly, a Saint has left us and gone home to God. Father Maher served our Parish, St. Joseph's In Prattville for eight years (1978 - 1985) and during that time we built our present church. My husband Frank had just become Catholic in 1976 and he worked with Fr. Maher building the new church. They became very close an our whole family loved him so much. We will miss him but we remember all our blessings from him and know that his life blessed so many of our friend and family. Rest in Peace, dearly beloed.

I attended St. Thomas Catholic School in Chickasaw from K to 8th grade. I was fortunate that Father Maher was there most of the time I attended. He impacted my life deeply. I still remember the hugs and the songs. I looked forward to them everyday. When he spoke you knew that God was as real and loving as Father Maher was. Not many compare to the light and love he showed us daily. I am grateful to have known him.

Fr. Maher, you touched so many people. I was honored to work as your secretary at St. Thomas-by-the-Sea until you left for St. Rose of Lima. You were always so humble and loving, I know you will be missed by many. I can still see you, sitting in a chair to the side of the altar, chatting with the Lord. And now you are face to face! May you rest in peace.

A beautiful life dedicated to God and people. Fr. Maher influences my life at a young age while an elementary student at St Thomas Catholic School in Chickasaw . He always greeted you with a warm smile and a generous hug. His ability to teach about God was in his daily actions, and excellent homilies that were down to earth and understandable. Thank you for touching my life! With loving respect...

Father Maher had such an impact on my life. As a student at Saint Thomas Catholic School and Church he taught and preached of God's love daily. He even had physical education with the students because he liked to stay fit and enjoyed the students. He taught us a wonderful song I still sing today. "Have faith, hope and charity and the Blessed Lord you'll surely please, how do I know the Bible tells me so. Don't worry about tomorrow just be real good today the Lord is right beside you to guide you on your way, so have faith, hope and charity... ❤️" He is loved and missed!

Heaven's gain and our loss. Father Maher ministered to me when my soul was dying. With a hug and a question, "Do you know that God loves you more than anything in this world?" That simple question was and is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. May you rest in God's loving arms.

Father Maher came to St. Joseph in Prattville already knowing me and my family. He had been pastor of St. Thomas in Chickasaw my parents parish. So in many ways he was family right away. He has touched me and my family deeply, especially when I had the misfortune to be in a serious car accident. He was the first to get to the hospital and stayed with my husband until they knew I would recover. He then went to our home and stayed with our children until my husband got home. This is just one of many occasions he shared himself with us. He was a simple man of God who he loved madly.

On behalf of the Maher family, a very special and heartfelt thank you to Fr.
